Accurate people counting can be the foundation on which building owners and facility managers can take strategic decisions, and it can be used to inform the day-to-day operations of directors, managers and other supervisors responsible for caring for others. The IMBuildings People Counter accurately detects real-time occupancy of buildings and outdoor locations without invading privacy.

The basis of the IMBuildings sensors is “People Counting”. The products measure the effect of the presence of people on the environment. Occupancy can be measured by counting the footfall in every passageway. This information can be used to determine the utilisation of a building or room. The sensors help gain insight into how many people are in a room, as well as where they are moving. For example, the University of Amsterdam use IMBuildings sensors to see how many people there are in a library or study room. They can then choose whether to close a room or keep it open. The closed rooms then do not need to be heated or illuminated, which saves energy. Students use an app to see which rooms are open and where there is still room to work. The sensors therefore help prevent energy wastage, increase efficiency, and save costs. For example, the heating can be turned down slightly when occupancy is high, and turned down a lot when a room is unoccupied.

The so-called people-counting sensors can be expanded with sensors that measure temperature, humidity and CO2 content. These insights help determine the appropriate response to air quality and health in relation to a room. Predictions can be made with the collected data to anticipate what will happen within a certain period.
